The region’s scientists are behind some very exciting innovations in medical research and technology
In August, Tatler celebrates the scientists and innovators who are pushing the boundaries of human knowledge. With their brilliant minds, these honourees from Asia’s Most Influential create solutions for the world, improving our quality of life and furthering our understanding of complex problems like cancer and blood disorders.
In Taiwan, for example, Ko-Chung Lin has been instrumental in the development of therapies for oral cancer, while in Singapore, nanotechnologist Jackie Ying is leading advancements in materials science. Hong Kong’s Dennis Lo is making early cancer detection more accessible, while the Philippines’ Pia D Bagamasbad is championing the development of life sciences. Their work not only highlights the region’s incredible scientific talent but also lays the groundwork for breakthroughs that will benefit future generations.

Dennis Lo, molecular biologist, Insighta (Hong Kong)
Molecular biologist Dennis Lo is behind the development of non-invasive prenatal diagnostic tests, as well as new approaches to cancer liquid biopsy. In 2023, Lo, together with Danny Yeung of Prenetics, established Insighta, a groundbreaking venture that aims to make early cancer detection affordable through Lo’s liquid biopsy platform Fragma. “We are driven by the profound potential to save countless lives, and together, we will make a significant stride towards a healthier future for all,” he said in a statement. Insighta plans to introduce Presight for lung and liver cancer screening in 2025—using only a blood sample, at a price of just US$200—and Presight One for more cancer screenings in 2027.
